Okay, it may not be the most surprising news to ever hit the pages of TruTower, but it’s certainly worthy of attention, especially when the IDC-posted PC sales numbers for the first quarter of the year are showing their largest steep to date (since the IDC started tracking PC sales in 1994) despite Windows 8 Pro launching during the quarter.
Worldwide computer shipments during the quarter fell 13.9 percent to 76.3 million total sales. While the IDC does note that Windows 8’s new interface could be a factor, it’s not fair to say that was entirely the reason behind this drop when in fact, it was probably a minimal reason, especially considering PC sales have been slipping long before Windows 8 even showed its modern UI skin.
A combination of the aforementioned UI change as well as the continued rise of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets could be a likely cause as well as higher PC prices in a continually battered economy. It’s also worth noting that the IDC considers a “PC” to include “Desktops, Portables, Mini Notebooks, and Workstations and do not include handhelds, x86 Servers and Tablets (i.e. iPad and Android-based Tablets with detachable keyboards).”
That being said, as far as the worldwide sales PC devices to get, HP leads the pack with 15.7 percent, followed by Lenovo, Dell, Acer and ASUS, respectively.
