Nimbuzz officially entered the VoIP market in January 2007. In May 2008, the company launched the combined Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) and instant messaging client that is still used today, letting its users make calls, send photos, music, videos and other files for free. The application also allows users to chat via chat rooms — a unique feature among the VoIP products — in addition to location-sharing features for meeting other users.
As of March 15, 2013, Nimbuzz had 150 million users worldwide, with most of those users residing in India and the Middle East.
Through its subscription-free prepaid NimbuzzOut feature, the service enables users to call mobile phones and landlines at low rates. Nimbuzz users create a user name similar to Skype in order to use these features. Nimbuzz does not yet offer users the ability to receive calls through its services using a Nimbuzz-provided phone number.
On October 28, 2014, UK-based New Call acquired a majority stake in Nimbuzz.
