As reported by CNET, a rumor originating from The Korea Times this week claims that Samsung is working on a Galaxy Note III with a whopping 6.3-inch display, roughly eight-tenths of an inch larger than the Galaxy Note II.
Samsung has pioneered the “phablet” category, a segment of devices reserved for something between a smartphone and tablet. Initially mocked for the size of the device, Samsung saw decent sales of the first Android-powered Galaxy Note, and pushed for wider distribution with the successor Galaxy Note 2, which saw its display grow to 5.5 inches from 5.3.
A 6.3-inch display is certainly massive, and it’s going to be interesting to see how well a human hand can hold the device (if it can at all). It’s possible that Samsung may be able to increase the screen size by a larger margin than it increases the body size, possibly making the screen as large as the body itself, but it will still result in a need for a larger device.
