Apple’s iOS 6 Maps’ issues have been well-documented around the interwebs. We even saw the iOS 6 Maps program lose to Google Maps in an experiment done by Truphone back in September. Today, those issues again take the forefront and remind motorists the world over to have a back-up maps plan, just in case.
Local police in the city of Mildura, Australia, have been forced to warn motorists of the inaccuracies contained within iOS 6 Maps, which lists Mildura in the middle of Murray Sunset National Park, about 70km away from where it should be.
Police have had to rescue motorists that have ended up lost or stranded, many going without food or water for 24 hours. Others were forced to walk through the park — which contains no water supply and can reach temperatures of up to 46° Celsius (115° Fahrenheit) — in order to get phone reception. Victorian police have called it a “potentially life-threatening issue.”
Victoria Police have notified Apple of the Mildura matter.
This is just one more piece of evidence that Apple’s iOS 6 Maps program is in dire need of updates, and is enough to make some concerned users wonder if maybe Apple pushed iOS 6 Maps out to replace Google Maps a little too quickly. Motorists should definitely pack a paper map with them just to double check and make sure their beloved Maps program — whether it be iOS 6 Maps, Google Maps, or Bing Maps — does not lead them astray.
