This is a feature that’s been a long time coming. Apple has been doing iTunes gift cards for a long time, and so it’s high time that Google start doing gift cards for its own store, which they do indeed plan on doing.
Android Police uncovered the first bit of evidence that Google is set to unveil gift cards and wishlists in the new Google Play store v3.8.15 APK. It appears that the url play.google.com/redeem is the likely destination for adding and redeeming gift cards. At the moment, however, the page returns a “404 page not found” error.
To add onto the previous evidence, the folks at Android Central were sent images of the actual gift cards themselves (shown above). These images show the outer wrapping with increments of $10 and $25 — both branded for Google Play, with “Music Movies Books Apps & More” at the bottom. It’s not quite known what increments the cards will be available in aside from these.
For now, the gift cards and the details about their possible launch are unknown, as are where the gift cards will be available and when. Still, if you’ve added the gift card and wishlist options in the Google Play store to your personal wishlist, you may yet have your gift show up soon.
