Messaging apps, social media platforms, apps on ios and android

In its latest report, comScore has found that both Facebook and Facebook Messenger have taken the lead in the U.S. smartphone apps market, overtaking Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and other social apps. The apps both overtook YouTube for the first time.

According to the report Facebook ranked as the top smartphone app, reaching 73.3 percent of the app audience, followed by Facebook Messenger at 59.5 percent. Instagram held 38.7 percent and Twitter held 25.7 percent. At the bottom of the 15 top apps sat Snapchat with 21.9 percent.

Part of this popularity may be due to Facebook forcing its users to use Messenger as a separate application, which caused a backlash across the internet.

Interestingly, WhatsApp Messenger, another Facebook property, is nowhere to be found in the list despite gaining ground and having 900 million users. Other heavy hitters that didn’t make the cut include LINE, WeChat, and Tango, the latter of which has seen some success in the U.S.

The report covered the top apps for July 2015.
