Viber for Windows Phone 8, WP8 VoIP, Voice over IP app

Ever since Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten acquired Viber earlier this year, it’s been clear that the company sees huge potential in the messaging and calling platform. In fact, the company says the app is “the future” of the company, and its growth makes it clear why Rakuten made the acquisition in the first place.

During it’s earnings call, Rakuten announced that Viber now holds 608 million registrations, consisting of 400 million unique IDs. In just over a year, the app has increased from 200 million total users.

We previously published a report that put Viber’s current user count at 400 million, which came directly from Viber CEO Talmon Marco, but this is the first confirmation of the count we’ve received from the company.

This news bodes well for Viber, which is looking to expand its presence worldwide to stay ahead of WhatsApp and WeChat, two of its strongest competitors. Viber is currently available in 10 languages, including Arabic, English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. The app can be downloaded on most major mobile platforms.
