Calling and messaging apps do command quite a bit of value, as we saw earlier this year with Facebook’s $19 billion WhatsApp purchase and Rakuten’s $900 million Viber acquisition.

So the looming question is, just how much is Snapchat worth?

According to Bloomberg, Snapchat is currently in talks over a new round of funding with investors, which include Yahoo-backed Alibaba, that could value the company at $10 billion.

This is an incredible number, especially considering that Snapchat declined a $3 billion Facebook offer less than a year ago.

Snapchat’s popularity has continued to grow

Snapchat recently launched messaging in its application, which pushed it well into WhatsApp territory and the extra user engagement could have assisted with increasing the app’s value.

Snapchat’s popularity has continued to grow, with people sending more than 700 million “snaps” a day and more than 500 million stories viewed daily according to the company.

Alibaba had previously lead a $280 million round for calling and messaging app Tango.
