After being named the fastest growing social application by GlobalWebIndex, Tencent’s popular WeChat has another winning milestone to be proud of: the social app has crossed the 100 million download mark on Google Play internationally.
Speaking on this, Poshu Yeung, Vice President of the International Business Group at Tencent, said, “WeChat is committed to provide users with a holistic and streamlined social communication experience. We are very pleased by the overwhelming response from our users across the world. We will continue with our commitment to innovation and provide our users with an easy-to-use, all-in-one experience.”
Localized content has been key to WeChat success
WeChat has been continually pushing localized features and in-app content as a way to continue its growth streak. Some of these features include the WeChat gaming platform, location-based services, WeChat stickers, and more. The company has also been expanding WeChat capabilities to cover other ventures.
WeChat has strong and growing competition in the messaging space and with the recent acquisition of Viber by Rakuten and acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook, the competition in the space is only going to get more heated from here on out.
