Carriers in the U.S. in particular are notorious for abusing the term “4G,” which was originally meant to refer to LTE-Advanced technology. Apple had also issued refunds in Australia for marketing their new iPad as “4G” even though consumers in the region could not take advantage of LTE.
So, forget that moniker, as Apple has quietly re-named its tablet as the iPad WiFi + Cellular. As noticed by 9to5mac, the change occurred within the last “24-48 hours” across many of Apple’s region-specific webstores and retail locations, including those in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada and various countries in Asia.
In many regions, the best you’ll get out of the tablet is HSPA, even though it’s also equipped for LTE, which Apple had considered good enough to market as 4G.
No other iPad models have seen any name changes as of yet, including the iPad 2, which still has its cellular-equipped name variant, iPad 2 WiFi + 3G.
You’ve got to love the power of marketing.
