The excitement over Mozilla’s upcoming HTML5-based Boot to Gecko (B2G or BtG) mobile OS is almost legendary. It’s a promising platform, one many Tru users hope to see the Tru VoIP app on someday. While that day may be months or years away for App users, Tru SIM users can likely purchase an unlocked device and use it right from the get-go.
BtG’s initial release is upon us, first through Brazil’s Telefonica. The handsets are set to go on sale by the end of this year or in early 2013 according to Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs, who made the announcement in São Paulo.
Unfortunately, Kovacs failed to say what kind of hardware will run the web-based OS, but Pablo Larrieux, the chief innovation officer of Telefonica Vivo, indicated that the handsets will be unlocked (Tru SIM users take note) and priced to move: they’ll cost as much as a feature phone.
While the release is still months away, the news from here on out regarding BtG will be a matter of “when” instead of “if.”
Are you looking forward to Boot to Gecko?
