For many, this may not come as a surprise, but WhatsApp is so far the frontrunner of all messaging applications as far as the amount of usage is concerned on smartphones and tablets running the Android operating system.
WhatsApp is far ahead of Facebook’s Messenger in usage worldwide
The stats were sent to us from Mobidia and cover the week of October 20. They clearly show that WhatsApp is far ahead of Facebook’s Messenger service at 200 minutes per week per user worldwide. Meanwhile, Facebook showed only about 25 minutes of usage for the week.
Not surprisingly, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is also overtaking the social network with roughly 75 minutes per user for the week.
BBM has roughly three times the amount of usage as Facebook’s Messenger
These numbers are pretty well reflected in different countries as well. In the United States, WhatsApp and BBM stand at about 100 and about 80 minutes, respectively, with Facebook bringing up the rear at the same 25 minute average as the worldwide average. In the United Kingdom, Facebook once again holds at about 25 minutes, with WhatsApp and BBM being used 90 and 75 minutes for the week, respectively.
Engagement is very important in a social network and it definitely looks as though WhatsApp and BBM will be far ahead of Facebook for at least the near term, even with the new changes Facebook is making to its Messenger. Only time will tell if BBM or other applications will catch up to WhatsApp or if WhatsApp will continue to reign supreme for Android users.
