The latest update from Skype gives Retina displays and Apple fans a little love as 720p HD video calls make their debut on both iPhone 5 and iPad 4. Does this mean you’ll be able to see the beads of sweat coming from your significant other’s forehead as he proposes marriage to you over a video call and waits while you pretend to give it some thought? Well, maybe not with the clarity you’d like to remember, but yes.
In addition to the 720p HD calling, the update also brings a number of additional improvements along for the ride:
- Audio and video call quality and stability improvements.
- A new, easier to use country code selector on the dialpad.
- Stability improvements for users of iOS 7 beta. We realize that some of you are using iOS 7 beta and have been experiencing some instability with Skype – this release fixes some of the major issues customers were facing.
- General fixes and improvements.
Of course, to take advantage of these new features, you’ll need the right device and operating system to boot, which include iPhone models 3GS or later, iPod Touch 3rd to 5th generation, and all iPad models (though you’ll need at least iPhone 5 and iPad 4 to take advantage of the HD calling). You’ll also need to have iOS 5.0 or later installed on your device.
The company also promises full iOS7 support when the new OS is unveiled, which is expected to happen on September 10th. For now, you can get the latest version of Skype here.
