After moving full pace from 600 million users last year to hitting a new milestone of 700 million users in January, it seems WhatsApp Messenger is on an unstoppable roll, as it was announced late last week that the popular messaging app has hit 800 million users.
At the current rate, this could put the app at over a billion users by the end of the year, vastly ahead of WeChat, LINE and Snapchat.
Jan Koum, the CEO and co-founder of WhatsApp, revealed the numbers on his Facebook page.
Facebook bought last year for $22 billion and has been continuously adding users since, while also keeping its Facebook Messenger service alive and kicking.
The Facebook social network itself now boasts about 1.4 billion monthly users, while its Messenger has about 600 million.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call that he expects the app to be an important contributor to Facebook’s overall business once it reaches the one billion user mark.
