It turns out that stickers might not be the only change coming to BlackBerry Messenger. BlackBerry is reportedly experimenting with ads in BBM as a way to further monetize the app and its more than 80 million users.
The update was first spotted by Twitter user @djghettoredneck (via), who also provided the image shown here to support the report. It has been noted in the image that the user “MUST stay on this version of BBM to receive ads,” indicating the availability of ads for a limited number of users.
BBM ads may or may not see the light of day
BlackBerry hasn’t stated whether or not advertising is indeed coming to BBM, so this news should be taken with a grain of salt. It’s quite common for app developers to test new waters in limited numbers and then scrap those plans later on. It’s possible we could see an implementation similar to that of Tango’s last year.
BlackBerry is currently available for Android and iOS, but it’s also confirmed for Windows Phone and Nokia X as well.
