Kakao Corp., the developer of the popular KakaoTalk mobile messaging app recently announced that the number of users who are utilizing the service has reached the 95 million mark since launching in March 2010, and is expected to hit 100 million users by the end of June, spanning over Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone.
Much of this growth is attributable to the games that have launched on the service recently, many of which have made the top downloads lists.
Of course, Kakao has some time to go before it matches the user counts of its rivals. LINE blew past 150 million users last month, Viber exceeded 175 million in February, and Skype currently holds the top spot with an eventual goal to hit 1 billion total users.
It’s definitely great to see KakaoTalk growing and doing so well alongside other major VoIP and messaging services, and as it continues to grow and gain in popularity, we can only hope that it doesn’t experience some of the problems that are plaguing other services in some parts of the world.
