While some platforms may be struggling in the U.S. — where two thirds of new phone purchases are smartphones — Android is showing very few signs of wear and tear as it climbs to close to 52 percent of the American smartphone market (51.8 percent) according to Nielsen. Google’s OS got close last winter.
Apple shouldn’t be complaining too much either, as it kept climbing to 34.3 percent a bit of an increase over recent months as it looks to launch its new iPhone device this fall. With the Samsung Galaxy S III now available in the Android camp, this could cause some changes in a few months as far as the numbers go.
Windows Phone continues to gain its market share ever so slightly, but we could see this jump higher if all the buzz and anticipation surrounding Windows Phone 8 is any indication.
As we’ve seen in the past, though, these increases are mostly coming at the expense of platforms who are already struggling to hold on to and gain market share, such as Symbian, Palm, and BlackBerry — which still doubles Windows Phone in market share in the U.S. so far, but is steadily losing this ground as time goes on. It’s going to be an interesting fall season for the American market.
