BlackBerry 9300 (3G), RIM BB9300, BB OS

It’s always great to see good news coming from the Waterloo offices for a change, and this news definitely qualifies as good.

Some big download numbers have laid to rest a common misconception — especially among users of other platforms — that there is a lack of an app selection for BlackBerry handsets and the PlayBook tablet. Over 90,000 apps, including the legacy Tru VoIP App, cover the company’s BlackBerry App World store. And, according to RIM, three billion downloads have occurred since the opening of App World.

That number amounts to 2.5 million downloads a day — certainly no small feat and definitely worth celebrating. While this may pale in comparison to the download numbers of other platforms, it comes as music to the ears for many BlackBerry fans who were worried that their favorite company would be forgoing the upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS and looking in another direction instead.
