Finally, Research in Motion has announced that developers for its upcoming (and long-awaited) BlackBerry 10 platform will have test units in their hands by May.

RIM plans to hand out up to 2,000 devices running BB10 at the BlackBerry Jam conference in Orlando, Florida on May 1-3, putting an end to months of waiting while Apple and Google continue their market dominance with their iOS and Android platforms, respectively.

“It’s a huge step forward on our path to eventually launching BB10,” RIM executive Alec Saunders told Bloomberg. “It’s tangible evidence of the company making progress to finally shipping the device.”

Saunders also told Bloomberg that the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, which uses an operating system that is broadly the same as BB10, has about 10,000 apps, which should port very easily onto the new generation of smartphones, good news for any Tru BlackBerry application fans.

As long as there are no further setbacks and everything works out as RIM plans, the BB10 operating system is set to release before the end of 2012.
